“A few clubs” battling to sign Super League starlet

There is one young British forward who is being talked about more than anyone else it seems.

That is Leeds Rhinos academy product Owen Trout who has been an impressive performer at Huddersfield Giants lately.

A man in demand, he has turned down a new deal at Huddersfield and has been linked with the likes of Castleford Tigers and Hull FC.

The latest reports are that he is headed to Leigh Leopards but Huddersfield boss Ian Watson has said there are still a few clubs battling it out for his signature.

“Nothing new from us,” Watson said when asked if there was an update on the young forward from the Giants’ end and their efforts to keep him.

He added: “I think there are quite a few clubs in for him.

“He is getting offers from a few places. He’ll have to make his decision on what he thinks is best for his career on the back end of that.

“It is hard to look in a different direction when people are throwing contracts at you and they are probably pretty appealing contracts.”

He explained why Trout is in such high demand:

“There’s not loads of middles knocking around who are young and British and you will see if people have more space in their salary cap than we have or someone else, that is how they will potentially get him in.

“That is the nature of a salary cap sport and it does make it really intriguing to be fair and difficult at times because you want to keep everybody but you know you can’t pay everyone what they are worth at that time so you have to balance out what is best for you and the club and for them.”
