New St Helens assistant coach Lee Briers has revealed that he was offered a head coaching role in Super League before taking his new position.
The former Warrington Wolves playing legend has already had a number of coaching roles, including with Wigan Warriors and most recently, Brisbane Broncos.
He’ll now be joining Paul Wellens’ coaching team, looking to improve on their position this season – just about making it to the play-offs.
However, he has never taken on a head coach role in his career so far.
St Helens assistant Lee Briers reveals rival job offer
Speaking on The Bench podcast with Jenna Brooks and Jon Wilkin, he revealed that he had received a head coaching role from another club, but that he had rejected it.
He said: “I got offered a head coach role but it wasn’t right for me at that time. I’m not too sure that head coach is for me.
“Yeah, I’m not too sure. I just love developing players and you do that best when you’re an assistant coach. So if it comes, it comes, it’s not going to be in the near future for me. I’m just loving what I’m doing.
“It’s always been my mentality. I’ve been asked this a lot of times. Am I ready? Yeah I’m ready to do it but wanting to do it is a totally different thing.
“Obviously St Helens got in touch. It’s a weird one because it’s where it all started for me. I’m a St Helens boy, I still live in St Helens.
“It ticked every box for us. We’ve still got a daughter back out who was not seen for two years, but it was a big decision because Brisbane is a fantastic place and the NRL is a fantastic competition.”
It seems likely that the club that made the offer was Hull FC mid-season, as it was widely reported that he was a target for the Black and Whites.
