Super League side’s playoff hopes dented by season-ending injury

Leeds Rhinos Super League

Catalans Dragons’ hopes to appear in the Super League playoffs are currently hanging in the balance.

The Dragons made their way to the Grand Final last season, only losing to Wigan Warriors in what was billed as Sam Tomkins’ final game.

However, they’re now in a situation where they’ve brought him out of retirement – perhaps showing that they’re desperate.

They are, along with St Helens, just one point ahead of Leigh Leopards and two ahead of Leeds Rhinos, and hold the sixth and final playoff spot.

With just one win in their last four games, a run that includes a loss to London Broncos, they aren’t exactly in the perfect position.

Now their situation has only got worse, as the club have confirmed in a statement today.

The club revealed: “Matt Ikuvalu and Jarrod Wallace underwent scans to determine the extent of their injury

“Matt Ikuvalu has a tear in his right pectoral muscle. The Catalans center underwent surgery in Montpellier and will be sidelined for the rest of the season.

“Jarrod Wallace suffered a ligament injury to his knee. The Australian prop is now working with the medical staff to return to competition as soon as possible.

“His recovery will determine his availability.”

Matt Ikuvalu, a two-time NRL Premiership winner with Sydney Roosters, had so far only missed two games all season.

He also provided an important role in 2023 in the club’s journey to Old Trafford, from both the wing and in the centres.

Wing is a position he has played in recently due to Tom Johnstone’s own lengthy injury layoff – and now they’re in an even worse position there.

Meanwhile, NRL recruit Jarrod Wallace should be back before him, and has played four games since his switch from The Dolphins.
