Throughout Super League history we have seen the likes of Leeds Rhinos legend Jamie Peacock go around until he was nearly 40, meanwhile St Helens legend plays like he is still 25 even though he is edging closer and closer to 40.
However, there has been one player in recent times who has defied the laws of nature by playing on into his 40s it is Fuifui Moimoi.
Like Leeds legend John Holmes who started his career in 1968 and kept going until 1990 or indeed like Dewsbury Rams halfback Paul Sykes who is still going strong into his 40s, Moimoi just can’t seem to let rugby league go and who can blame him, it’s the greatest game of all.
The big prop started his career with a decade long stint at Parramatta Eels playing in the 2009 Grand Final and being named in the 2008 World Cup winning New Zealand squad as he became a dual international with Tonga and New Zealand,
After 201 appearances, at the age of 34 he made the move to England with the Leigh Leopards, then Leigh Centurions, playing 45 games for them as they secured promotion.
He would never play Super League however as he joined Toronto Wolfpack in 2017 helping their climb through the divisions.
He would also play for Workington Town and Rochdale Hornets before retiring in 2022 after brief stints in rugby union with Bradford and Bingley RFC and York.
However, just shy of his 43rd birthday in September, Moimoi is set to play on with Millom RLFC against Leigh East this weekend.
He also has his eyes set on representing Cumbria later this season.
The club made the following statement following the conformation of his signing:
“All at Millom RLFC at over the moon to announce the signing of Fui Fui Moi Moi. Fui will join his nephews Hosea and Naki in playing for Millom and is straight into contention for Saturdays game.”
Moimoi’s journey has taken him from Parramatta all the way to the lower league in the UK.
He truly is a man who loves the sport of rugby league. His return is sure to prompt plenty of people to head down and watch the game between Millom and Leigh East.
