Hull KR have confirmed that Tom Opacic will be leaving the club at the end of this season, after two Super League seasons.
He has played 45 games so far for the club after signing ahead of the 2023 season, and has scored 13 tries. Hull KR head coach Willie Peters said in a statement: “I’d like to wish Tom (Opacic), Jordyn, and the kids all the best in their next chapter.
“Tom has played an important role over the last two seasons and we thank him for his contribution to get Hull KR to where it is today. As we look to the end of the season, Tom remains an important member of the squad for the remainder of 2024.”
The centre held a quota spot, and therefore the club will have one free for next season – which could be used on Rhyse Martin, who has been heavily linked with a move to Craven Park. Opacic, previous to his Hull KR move, had spent his whole professional career with NRL sides, but if he decides to stay in Super League, who could he sign for?
Three Super League clubs that could sign outgoing Hull KR star
Castleford Tigers
The Tigers are a club that would certainly have Opacic as a starter if they made the signing, unlike KR, who signed Jack Broadbent from them earlier this season. With Corey Hall leaving, Craig Lingard’s side will certainly look for a centre.
Their weakness in the position was certainly highlighted when Sam Wood was injured – he’ll miss the rest of the season. His performances had been covering this up for a while, but since then, Alex Mellor (a forward) has been the best-performing player to plug the gap, over Josh Hodson, Luis Johnson and Will Tate.
The Tigers could also do with some defensive steel out wide, with the right-hand side of Hall and Jason Qareqare being a particular problem on their own line. They have a quota spot free since centre Charbel Tasipale’s departure from the club, so could look to snap up the Robins man.
Leigh Leopards
Leigh Leopards have zero centres currently contracted for 2025, and despite Tesi Niu reportedly heading to the club, that’s still not enough, with Zak Hardaker gone and now, it seems, so is Ricky Leutele, linked with a surprise return to Huddersfield Giants.
John Asiata and Tom Amone are also confirmed departures, going to Hull FC and Canterbury Bulldogs respectively, so the Leopards have plenty of quota space available for this move if they wish to make the signing.
They have seen his quality first-hand – but did triumph over his side in the 2023 Challenge Cup final.
St Helens
After being briefly linked with the re-signing of Kevin Naiqama from Huddersfield Giants, it seems that Saints are still in the market for a centre.
Two of their players in this position – Konrad Hurrell and Waqa Blake – are out of contract at the end of the season, with decisions yet to be made on their futures.
Both of them are also quota players, meaning they should be able to make this signing, even with Tristan Sailor making his way to Merseyside for 2025.
