Wigan report over £600,000 loss

Bad 24 hours for Rugby League

Wigan Today have revealed that despite winning the Super League Grand Final, Wigan Warriors reported an operating loss of over £600,000 last year.

The total loss of £605,286 is significantly more than the previous year (£184,422) with wage rises and a fall in sponsorship contributing to the increased figure.

Average attendances have also fallen to around 13,500 and DW Stadium rental costs went up last season from £322,824 to £378,750.

Warriors’ owner Ian Lenagan has put the fall in ticket sales down to the uncertainty of the current Super 8s structure.

Despite these latest numbers, Lenegan says they will be improved on this year after major sponsorship deals were announced with nPower and Shearings.

On the pitch, Wigan were beaten in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley last month and are in danger of missing out on the top four after defeat to Castleford on Sunday.
