Wigan beat Giants to keep slim top four hopes alive

Wigan Warriors won a scrappy tussle against Huddersfield Giants to keep alive their hopes of a top four finish in the Super League Super 8s.

Wigan led 10-4 at half-time after Jermaine McGillvary’s opener was cancelled out by efforts from Anthony Gelling and Liam Farrell.

A Sam Powell penalty goal gave Wigan an eight-point lead. Sam Tomkins’ last-second score was insult to injury for Giants, who ran out of time.

It was the hosts who opened the scoring in the tenth minute. Wigan failed to deal with a high kick into the corner and McGillvary picked up the loose ball to score. Danny Brough dragged his conversion attempt wide, 0-4.

The Warriors responded perfectly as they shipped it through quick hands to Gelling who wrestled over in the 13th minute. George Williams was unable to edge Wigan into the lead as his conversion was unsuccessful, 4-4.

Farrell fired Wigan into the lead in the 36th minute when he slid onto a Sam Powell stab into the in-goal area. The hooker converted to put the Warriors six points ahead, 10-4.

Wigan led 10-4 at half-time.

Wigan were awarded a penalty in front of the sticks in the 51st minute and Powell added the two points, 12-4.

A kick through from Michael McIlorum saw the supporting Tomkins dart over for a well-deserved try in the 79th minute. Tomkins converted his own try to all but seal the two points for the Cherry and Whites with a minute remaining.

Tries from Gelling, Farrell and Tomkins confirmed the win for the Warriors.
