Widnes Vikings v Castleford Tigers: Preview

Widnes Vikings v Castleford Tigers

Widnes face an in-form Castleford side after picking up a hard-fought point away in France last weekend. The Tigers travel to the Select Security Stadium full of confidence after mauling arch-rivals Leeds Rhinos 66-10 at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

Chris Bridge spoke to the media team ahead of the game and told them that he is looking forward to a tough battle with Daryl Powell’s side come Sunday afternoon. “They (Castleford) offer stuff all over the park, they come out wide, out of the blocks quite early from the backfield.” Bridge added: “They have Hardaker and Gale as well as their wingers linking up and scoring loads of tries.” Bridge also spoke of the Vikings draw in the South of France last Saturday evening and likened it to a loss, as they would have preferred to come away with the two points after outscoring the Dragons in tries but failing to convert two from three possible conversions.

Jordan Johnstone is replaced by Greg Burke in Denis Betts squad as they look to pull off a shock against this season’s early pace-setters.

Castleford forward Mike McMeeken spoke to the press too, speaking about the Tigers form so far and insisting the squad will not get carried heading into Sunday afternoon’s clash. “We are three wins from three at the moment, which is a great feeling to have, but we have to keep our feet on the ground.” He added: “We are just taking it week by week and, hopefully, we’ll keep knocking off the wins each week.”

Forward Matt Cook is also looking forward to the challenge. “Widnes have had some tough battles so far this season and we know Sunday’s game will not be easy. It’s going to be a real tough game we will need to be at our best to go there and pinch two points from them.”

Will Maher and Alex Foster drop out from last week’s squad, making way for Ben Roberts and Luke Million to return as Castleford look to maintain their 100 percent record in the North-West this Sunday

19-man squads are not named in position order as the team hasn’t been picked yet. Two players are still to drop out ahead of the match day 17.
