Widdop eyes shot at Super League

St George Illawarra co-captain Gareth Widdop is looking at a move to Super League next season according to Sky Sources.

The England international’s contract is up at the end of the season and it’s understood that he is weighing up a potential move back to the UK.

Widdop, 27, was born in Halifax but has spent his entire rugby league career in the NRL having moved to Australia with his family aged 16.

The stand-off won the 2012 Grand Final with the Melbourne Storm, where he played for four years, before joining St George in 2014 on a four-year deal.

Despite playing just shy of 150 NRL matches and amassing over 500 points, Widdop’s game-management has constantly been questioned by the Australian media.

A faltering half-back partnership with Benji Marshall has seen the Dragons struggle to score points over recent seasons, with the club only making the NRL Finals Series once since his arrival.

However, Widdop is still regarded as the linchpin of the St George team and his and the team’s performance this season will ultimately decide where he ends up in 2018.
