Wakefield Trinity v Salford Red Devils: Preview

Wakefield Trinity v Salford Red Devils

One of two Sunday afternoon games takes us to West Yorkshire where Wakefield Trinity take on the Salford Red Devils at the Beaumont Legal Stadium. Both sides go into the game with a win under their belts, with the home team coming out of a mud bath away against a dismal St Helens side with the two points following Jacob Miller’s late penalty try, whilst the Red Devils put Warrington to the sword, turning in an impressive display against an out of sorts Warrington outfit.

In what is likely to be an intriguing encounter, both sides possess game changing players who could turn the match on its head in an instant. For Wakefield, the two halfbacks: Sam Williams and Jacob Miller, have struck up a good partnership in recent weeks, with the home fans hoping this will continue. If they can get the ball out to both Mason Caton-Brown and Super League Young Player of the Year, Tom Johnstone, then Salford may be in for a long afternoon. The visitors are in a good vein of form however, and will fancy their chances to increase their winning run to three games. Michael Dobson masterfully controlled the game against the Wolves, with powerhouse centre Junior Sau proving to be a valuable asset in the centres. Salford have really kicked on from last year, and on current form, are on course to make the top 8.

Trinity make three changes to the squad that defeated St Helens last weekend, with Mitch Allgood recovering from concussion and in contention to make his Wakefield Super League debut. Dean Hadley also joins the squad following his loan move from Hull FC, with Anthony Walker also vying for a spot in the 17. The absentees for Wakefield include captain Danny Kirmond, who picked up a knee injury last time out, along with Chris Anakin and Joe Arundel.

The Salford Red Devils also make three changes, with fans being able to welcome back barnstorming forward Ben Murdoch-Masila. Further changes include the return of winger Justin Carney following the end of his two-match ban, and the talented Niall Evalds. Those dropping out of the squad include Jake Bibby and Ryan Lannon. Australian half back Todd Carney is still short of match fitness, and remains absent from the squad.
