Wakefield Trinity v Leigh Centurions: Preview

Tom Johnstone injury

Leigh Centurions can move to within a point of Super League leaders Wigan if they can beat Wakefield Trinity on Thursday night.

Neil Jukes’ side have impressed since their return to the top flight and picked up their third win of the season last week, beating Warrington Wolves 22-8 at the Leigh Sports Village.

It means that the Centurions have already won more games this season than they managed throughout their previous campaign in the Super League back in 2005.

Wakefield will be looking to bounce back after they left Headingley empty-handed last week, as the Leeds Rhinos maintained their 100% home record in 2017.

A 38-14 victory for the Rhinos prevented Wakefield from making it three wins in a row having defeated St Helens and Salford.

Trinity are now on four points after their opening five matches in the Super League and coach Chris Chester will be eager to see a response from his side when they face Leigh at the Beaumont Legal Stadium.

Wakefield make two changes to their 19-man squad for Thursday’s game with Mason Caton-Brown and Mikey Sio being replaced by Keegan Hirst, who returns from injury, and James Batchelor.

Forward Danny Kirmond is also available having avoided a ban after being charged with making a Grade A high tackle in the defeat to Leeds.

Leigh are without Glenn Stewart, as he serves the first of a two-game ban for a high tackle in the win over Warrington.

Forward Danny Tickle is set to start in the former Australia international’s place.

Dayne Weston and Curtis Naughton come back into contention after being named in the 19-man squad with Martyn Ridyard dropping out.

Leigh have yet to win on the road this season and the trip to West Yorkshire should make for a very tight encounter.

However, if the Centurions can replicate the performances that they have produced in their last two games, then they have every chance of picking up their third straight win in the Super League this season.

Wakefield Squad: Allgood, Arona, Arundel, Ashurst, Batchelor, Fifita, Finn, Grix, Hadley, Hirst, Huby, Johnstone, Jones-Bishop, Kirmond, Miller, Tupou, Walker, Williams, Wood.

Leigh Squad: Naughton, Brown, Higson, Crooks, Dawson, Drinkwater, Hock, Higham, Weston, Hansen, Pelissier, Tickle, Vea, Hampshire, Reynolds, Green, Hopkins, Acton, Burr.

Prediction: Wakefield 20-22 Leigh
