Heywood Road is sports stadium in Sale, Greater Manchester. It is the home ground of Swinton Lions Rugby League Club and Sale Football Club.
It was the home ground of spin-off professional club Sale Sharks until they moved to Edgeley Park, Stockport, in 2003. Its capacity is 5400 (2003). Sale Sharks’ ‘A’ team, the Sale Jets, still play at Heywood Road.
Because of the RFL’s minimum requirements for grounds in the Kingstone Press Championship, Swinton Lions were forced to vacate its Sedgley Park home in Whitefield ahead of the 2016 season. The club has signed a lease on a 7.3 acre site at Agecroft, which sits within the traditional boundaries of Swinton and Pendlebury.
In the short-term, Swinton – who have also played home games at Salford’s AJ Bell Stadium and Widnes’ Select Security Stadium – have signed a deal to be based at Sale Sharks’ old Heywood Road ground in Trafford until at least the end of the 2017 season.
