Toulouse crowned Championship Shield winners

Toulouse Olympique sealed Championship Shield glory as they beat Sheffield Eagles 44-14 at Stade Ernest Argeles on Saturday. Despite a Garry Lo hat-trick in the first half, Sheffield were overpowered during the final quarter of the match with Sylvain Houles’ men storming to a comfortable victory on home turf.

The Eagles scored the opening two tries of the contest through Castleford-bound Lo. The first was a treat as centre Menzie Yere kicked forward and the ball sat up perfectly for the winger to touch down. Jack Owens couldn’t convert but he was successful the second time around after Lo intercepted a Toulouse pass to go 60 metres to the line. Olympique hit back courtesy of Mark Kheirallah before Lo completed his hat-trick following a superb tackle from Yere which forced a knock-on in-goal. Tries from Stan Robin and Gavin Marguerite before half-time gave the French club a 16-14 lead going into the second half.

After the restart, quick tries from Rhys Curran and Paul Marcon extended Toulouse’s advantage. Despite Sheffield still being in with a chance, the hosts always looked comfortable and they asserted their dominance in the final 15 minutes with four tries. Kheirallah, Anthony Marion, Con Mika and Tony Maurel all crossed for Olympique who were crowned Championship Shield winners.
