Top 5 – Scrum Half

This is by far the hardest of the lists so far, with some of the top no. 7’s in the country on the sidelines with long term injuries.

5. Tyrone Roberts

Roberts made his move to Warrington at the start of the season and has become the central cog in the machine.

Warrington play through Roberts at first receiver, allowing their outside backs more time and space on the outside, leaving Roberts with stats that don’t truly reflect his quality.

With the combinations flowing and Warrington being fortunate in the injuries department, they will only continue to go from strength to strength.

4. Sam Powell

Powell made a switch from no. 9 to no. 7 in 2018, leaving him with a much bigger role in the middle of the park and at the start of the season he seemed to flourish.

Wigan have hit a rot and with it Powell’s form seems to have fallen, but the Wigan half has managed to push his side into a comfortable position in the top 2.

He has 7 assists and over 400 tackles to his name, as good as any half back in the league.

Defensively solid and attacking prowess, he will be looking to steer his side back into League Leaders contention before the start of the Super 8’s competition.

3. Jacob Trueman

Castleford seem to have found a gem in Trueman.

He caught the eye, for the first time, at the DW stadium last season, after a fantastic performance ended Wigan’s hope of a top 4 finish.

At the start of 2018, Jacob struggled for game time but with the injury to Luke Gale, Trueman has been able to find a spot at scrum half, and has lit up his side with fantastic performances.

In a short amount of time, he has already mustered up 7 assists, equal with many that have been playing since week 1. One can only imagine he will find a constant spot in the team, even upon the return of Gale.

Despite this Myler has been the shining light, leading the league in try assists and directing the Leeds side round the field.

In truth there isn’t much more Richie can do to help the leeds side recover from their position, but if he continues to direct play, the rest of the leeds team need to follow his example.

At that point maybe Leeds can go back to the team we are used to seeing and end the season well.

Considerable mention – Luke Gale/Marc Sneyd

Both of these scrum halves have thrown themselves into international contention over the last few seasons and are the go to names for their sides.

These men have both been hit with long term injuries meaning they fell short of making this seasons top 5, but both will have pivotal parts to play come the day of their returns.

Kicking ability, decision making and ball skills to die for, both of these halves would be a great asset to any side in the league.

1. Danny Richardson

10 assists and 3 tries makes for good reading for any player in the league, never mind a player who is making his debut season at the starting position.

Young Richardson has developed into the centre piece in a St. Helens side that needs no more praise.

Maturity beyond his years, the half seems to be able to make big decisions with relative comfort, giving time for his half-back partner to get a grip of the attack.

The sky really is the limit for this young lad, and international honours are surely on the way in the near future, but to get to that point he has to get over a little hurdle called Gareth Widdop, although I wouldn’t put it past him to make that leap sooner rather than later.
