Toovey: Bentley’s Saints move is “bitter-sweet”

Bradford Bulls coach Geoff Toovey says he feels James Bentley’s move to St Helens is “bitter-sweet” for the club as they bid farewell to another brilliant academy product.

The Bulls fans have only had this season to enjoy Bentley’s undoubted talent after the back-rower graduated to the first team setup and took his opportunity with both hands.

He struck up a superb partnership with Ethan Ryan, who has also garnered interest from top tier clubs, and while Bentley’s move leaves Bradford a strike back-rower short for their League 1 campaign, Toovey says he’ll look forward to see the youngster ply his trade in Super League.

“He’s a really dedicated footballer and he wants to go places, and I think that move will help him,” Toovey told the Telegraph and Argus.

“Obviously he would have loved to stay at Bradford but the circumstances ensure that option is taken out of his hands. His career path now lies at St Helens and we wish him all the best.

“It’s bitter-sweet for us but can’t hold people back and circumstances favour him leaving, which is disappointing. Those circumstances are out of our control.

“He’s been great all year. He’s remained committed and I’m sure he will be for the final five games of the season. We look forward to watching him next year playing in Super League.”
