Tomkins targets Super League title with Catalans in 2019

On Saturday 13th October, Wigan Warriors won their fifth Super League Grand Final with victory against Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford. Shaun Wane’s team prevailed 12-4 at the Theatre of Dreams and as their starting lineup remained unchanged from their semi-final against Castleford Tigers. It was the perfect end to the season for the Warriors and their coach who, along with three key players, will have to remember their win over the Wolves as their final game at the club.

Sam Tomkins is one of the departing players, having secured a three-year contract with Challenge Cup winner’s Catalans Dragons, the only non-English based team in the Super League. With the Cherry and Whites, Tomkins has won every domestic honour in the game either side of a stint in the NRL with the New Zealand Warriors. Although the 29-year-old is switching from arguably the best team in the Super League right now to the Dragons, who finished 7^th on the ladder in 2018, he expresses no concerns about his shift to the French side.

“They’re a club that’s getting better and better,” said Tomkins. They are the Challenge Cup holders, so we have got some silverware to defend next year. I’ve won [the Grand Final] this year, but I can defend [the Challenge Cup] next year.”

We wrote an article in January about why Sam Tomkins will have a massive 2018 and based on the switch and Super League title; it’s fair to say that our prediction was completely accurate! Our prediction for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel award went to Ben Barba instead, however we can only go on to predict that for 2019, Tomkins’ work at the Catalans Dragons will be sufficient to nab the award! Tomkins is a serial winner and now the Perpignan club has him at their disposal, they may well add a Super League title to their Challenge Cup triumph next season.
