Tomkins says NRL stint was a ‘disappointment’

Sam Tomkins injury return

Former Vodafone Warriors full-back Sam Tomkins has admitted that his time in the NRL was a disappointment as the team failed to reach the finals in both of his seasons at Mt Smart Stadium.

The current Wigan Warriors man signed for the Kiwi club for a whopping $1.5 million but didn’t live up to the heights that were expected of him.

He registered over double figures in tries during his debut season before having a torrid second year, where he only played 13 matches due to injury and was replaced by Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

The England international told the Dominion Post: “I think my form with the Warriors probably mirrored that of the team as we missed the finals both seasons, so you have to say it was a disappointment,”

“In my first year I did OK, I played every game and scored 13 tries, but we lost our last match of the season to Pnrith where a win would have got us in the finals.

“The week before we’d beaten Gold Coast 42-0 and were very confident of making the finals but we just didn’t play well and ended up finishing ninth.”

But despite not being able to achieve what he wanted while playing in the NRL, Tomkins heaped praise on the Warriors.

“I loved my time there, the Warriors are a fantastic club,” he added.

“I made some friends for life and the chance to play with top class players like Shaun Johnson every day in training was great.”

Tomkins made 16 appearances for Wigan last season, scoring seven tries. He was ruled out of the Four Nations and the Warriors’ Grand Final victory due to a foot injury which he is currently dealing with. The full-back is unavailable for this weekend’s World Club Challenge match with Cronulla Sharks.

A big waste of $$$ we could have been letting some of NZ s youth come through who would have given 100 % and still have fared far better. To much $$$ is been spent on these overseas players who do not fit in to the Kiwi way of life and are along with there partners /wives only want to get back to the North of England and take the NZ dollars with them.Lets have the best of NZ and Aussie players only in our Warriors team,Unless there is a few more the likes of Burgess.s Grahams, and a few other English men who give there all to there adopted clubs.
