Tomkins: I never thought Wire would be in bottom four

Sam Tomkins injury return

Wigan Warriors full-back Sam Tomkins has expressed his disbelief that Warrington Wolves are on the verge of a place in the Qualifiers.

Ahead of his side’s game against the Wolves, Tomkins also said Wire will be wanting to prove people wrong and also take a leaf out of Leeds’ book when the Super 8s come around.

Warrington have a slight chance of a top eight finish but despite their current situation, Tomkins knows Tony Smith’s side will be coming to the DW with motivation to put one over on Wigan.

“If I was in their position and probably not making the eight, I’d think, ‘We have to set a standard here and show we’re better than this’,” Tomkins told Wigan Today.

“They’ll want to come and prove a point.

“We’ll be in the Super 8s and we’re in the Challenge Cup semis, and they’ll want to get a score and take two points off us.”

Tomkins praised Wolves boss Smith, saying he’s a “great coach” while pointing out the Warrington players will be wanting to prove people wrong.

“I never genuinely thought they’d be in the middle-8s, but that’s the way it is,” the full-back added.

“It’s just not gone for them, but look at what happened to Leeds last year, and now they’re one of the best teams in the competition.

“I imagine they’ll want to take a leaf out of their book.

“If they are in the middle-8s, I’d be surprised if they lost any games.”
