Titans Target Greenwood

Reports down under suggest NRL Club Gold Coast Titans are in discussions with St Helens second-row forward Joe Greenwood.

The highly rated 23-year-old has been on the Titans radar for some time now and they are looking to tie up a deal for the 2018 season, and they seem very confident that they will get their man.

Greenwood is under contract until the end of this year and is said to be keen on trying his luck in Australia. The move would see him link up with fellow Englishman Dan Sarginson who joined the Gold Coast club after his Grand Final success with Wigan in October.

Titans Head Coach Neil Henry is a known admirer of Greenwood recently saying: “He was someone we looked at and thought he would be a player of the future as a young guy coming through. He has being included in the English 30-man squad, so he’s certainly a player of prominence.”

Saints are said to be keen on a swap deal involving former Catalans Dragons’ second-rower Zeb Taia, but Henry insisted that was more a case of people putting two and two together.

There is a small chance that Greenwood could still go to the NRL for the coming season but Saints would surely insist on Taia being a makeweight in the deal.

Henry stated a lot of things would need to change for Greenwood to be made available for the coming season and he seems quite prepared to wait 12 months to get his man.

It was the interest from the NRL that led to Saints boss Keiron Cunningham calling for central contracts for England players to stop the player drain to the Southern Hemisphere.

Greenwood will surely have an important role to play in England’s World Cup campaign this coming November and his departure will leave a big hole in the Saints forward line.

Saddleworth Rangers junior Greenwood starred for the Redvee in their opening round win over Leeds when the Betfred Super League kicked off last Thursday.
