THROWBACK: Greg Inglis to the Championship?!

Rugby League player welfare

The year is 2015.

Sheffield Eagles are flying in the Championship and are well on their way to a top four finish and a place in the inaugural Qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Down Under, superstar Greg Inglis’ future with the South Sydney Rabbitohs is in doubt as his contract is set to run out in a year’s time.

Cue arguably the most random transfer link in rugby league history, between State of Origin star Inglis and the Eagles.

Sheffield were serious in competing with their British counterparts for his signature but accepted defeat if it came to the likes of European and New Zealand rugby union.

In an email sent to Inglis’ agent, a representative of the Sheffield club said: “I am sure we would be able to table an offer that is larger than any other rugby league club in the UK and would warrant further discussion.”

Sheffield’s then-CEO Ken Jones added: “There’s obviously speculation going round, and a lot of rumour, and yes, us, like any club in the world, would be interested in signing Greg Inglis.”

As everybody knows, Inglis stayed put with Souths and rejected all offers from various suitors around the globe – bringing the Eagles’ interest to an end.
