Super League Week 4 Predictions

This weekend all twelve Super League teams are in action, after there were only three games last weekend due to the World Club Challenge going on over in Australia.

Only four teams played last weekend. Those being Hull KR, Catalans Dragons, Widnes Vikings and Warrington Wolves.

Friday

Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves – Sky Sports (7:45pm KO)

This is arguably the biggest game of the weekend, with Wigan Warriors hosting a Warrington Wolves side, who got their first win of the campaign last weekend away at Widnes.

Wigan on the other hand played against Australian opposition in the form of South Sydney Rabbitohs last weekend, losing 18-8.

Wigan have won their opening two games this season in Super League, which sees them in second place, behind leaders St Helens on points difference. Wigan have beaten Salford and Hull FC (with the Hull game taking place in Australia.

Warrington on the other hand, haven’t had the greatest start to life under their new coach Steve Price, after losing two of the first three games with him in charge. They did win last time out however, with an 18-10 away win at local rivals, Widnes Vikings.

Huddersfield Giants v St Helens (7:45pm KO)

Both sides had a week off last weekend, so both sides should be fit and fresh for this encounter at the Kirklees Stadium.

Huddersfield have a 50%-win ratio so far this season, winning one and losing one of their opening two games so far. They opened the season with a heavy defeat away at Hull FC, before beating Warrington 20-6 at home two weeks ago.

St Helens on the other hand have had an impressive start to the Super League season, winning both of their opening two games, including a huge 46-6 win over last season’s regular season winners Castleford Tigers, in their opening game. They followed that up with a 21-12 away win in the south of France against Catalans Dragons, despite playing the majority of the second half with 12 men, after Morgan Knowles was sent off.

Salford Red Devils v Hull Kingston Rovers (8pm KO)

Salford enjoyed a week off last week, whilst Hull KR enjoyed a victory over French outfit Catalans Dragons.

Salford haven’t had the greatest of start to the season this year, losing both of their opening two games, against Wigan and Wakefield respectively. The first was a 40-12 home defeat, whilst they narrowly lost by two points at Wakefield, 14-12.

Hull KR on the other hand have won one of their opening three games on their return to Super League. They have lost to Wakefield and Leeds, however in the game against Leeds they were arguably the better team for the majority of the game and were unlucky to lose. As noted before, they did get their first win of the campaign last weekend, with a 23-4 win over struggling Catalans Dragons.

Saturday

Castleford Tigers v Hull FC – Sky Sports (3:15 KO)

Hull FC opened their campaign with a 38-12 win against Huddersfield Giants, but that has been followed by two consecutive defeats. They lost 24-10 to Wigan in the first ever Super League game to be played outside of Europe. That was followed by a 24-18 defeat to NRL side St George Illawarra Dragons, in what was a good performance by the Hull side.

Catalans Dragons v Wakefield Wildcats – Sky Sports (5:15 KO)

Catalans have had a bad start to the new season, sitting rock bottom of the Super League table with no points from three games so far.

Catalans have so far suffered defeats against Widnes, St Helens and also at Hull KR, so they are going to have to start to pick up form at some point, or they could find themselves in the bottom four and possibly the ‘Million Pound Game’ for the second consecutive year.

On the other hand, Wakefield have enjoyed a great start to the new season, sitting joint top of the table alongside St Helens, Wigan and Leeds. Wakefield opened their season with a 28-6 win against newly promoted Hull KR, before beating Salford 14-12 two weeks ago.

Sunday

Widnes Vikings v Leeds Rhinos – (3pm KO)

Both sides played last week, albeit on different sides of the world with Widnes hosting Warrington and Leeds travelling to Australia to play Melbourne Storm.

Widnes opened their campaign with an impressive 40-12 win over struggling Catalans Dragons, but two consecutive defeats to Castleford and local rivals Warrington have followed. They were beaten at Castleford 13-12 and 18-10 to Warrington so they have only lost narrowly in their two defeats thus far.

Leeds on the other hand are unbeaten in Super League, beating Warrington and Hull KR in their opening two fixtures. They beat Wire 16-12, whilst they also beat Hull KR 20-11 despite not playing that well in the game.

Predictions

Wigan v Warrington – I think Wigan will win a tight contest at the DW Stadium. Neither team had a week off last week and I think Wire may have won if they did have. I’m going 20-18 to Wigan.

Huddersfield v St Helens – We are yet to see Huddersfield on Sky Sports this season, so unsure what to expect from them. Saints have looked great, even with twelve men. I’m going 36-22 to Saints.

Salford v Hull KR – Salford are yet to win this season and Hull KR have impressed me when they have been on TV so far this season. I’m going 25-18 to Hull KR.

Castleford v Hull FC – It would be a lot tighter contest had Castleford not had a week off last weekend. Hull FC have also had a long flight home. I’m going 38-28 to Castleford.

Catalans Dragons v Wakefield – Catalans have looked woeful so far this season, whilst Wakefield have a 100% record thus far. I’m going 34-20 to Wakefield.

Widnes v Leeds – Widnes have not played awfully yet and Leeds are yet to lose in Super League. The long flight home may be a factor. I’m going 22-14 to Leeds.
