Super League Super 8s Team of the Week: Round 3

Leeds Rhinos 22-14 Leigh Centurions

Full-back – Zak Hardaker (Castleford Tigers)

Once again a class act for the Tigers. Hardaker weighed in with another two tries and an assist as he helped the club claim their first ever Super League Leaders’ shield.

Wing – Joe Burgess (Wigan Warriors)

Wigan warmed up for the Challenge Cup final with a superb display against the Salford Red Devils and Burgess certainly caught the eye. He grabbed a brace and made three clean breaks as the Warriors ran in with eight tries.

Centre – Jake Webster (Castleford Tigers)

An awesome performance from Webster as he ran in with four tries. He was a real driving force for his side and along with his impressive try haul, he contributed with three clean breaks.

Centre – Alex Mellor (Huddersfield Giants)

A pleasing performance from Mellor as he helped top-four outsiders Huddersfield to a 46-18 win over Hull FC. He finished off a fine team move with a well taken try.

Wing – Darnell McIntosh (Huddersfield Giants)

The winger played an important role as Huddersfield took Hull apart at the KCOM Stadium. He posed a constant threat and touched down twice in a strong all-round display.

Stand-off – Lee Gaskell (Huddersfield Giants)

All eyes were on Gareth Ellis after he announced his plans to retire at the end of the season but Gaskell helped Huddersfield spoil the party. The former St Helens, Salford Red Devils and Bradford Bulls star scored a stunning hat-trick as well as providing an assist.

Scrum-half – Luke Gale (Castleford Tigers)

One of the standout players in the Super League and such an important figure for the Tigers. Gale once again pulled the strings for Castleford, delivering an assist and scoring six goals.

Wakefield Trinity 24-25 Castleford Tigers

Prop – Adam Cuthbertson (Leeds Rhinos)

Cuthbertson is a player that Leeds can always rely on to make a big impact and he did so once again against St Helens. He scored a try, provided five offloads and also played his part defensively with 36 tackles completed.

Hooker – Matt Parcell (Leeds Rhinos)

Second-row – John Bateman (Wigan Warriors)

Wigan produced one of their strongest performances of the season as they saw off Salford and Bateman played a key role. He put in real shift, completing 42 tackles and delivering five offloads.

Second-row – Mike McMeeken (Castleford Tigers)

An absolute powerhouse for the Tigers as they claimed the Super League Leaders’ shield in style against Wakefield. McMeeken was everywhere, scoring a try and providing an assist whilst also gaining 150 meters for his team.

Loose-forward – Gareth Ellis (Hull FC)

Ellis might not have picked up the result he wanted to mark his 450th career appearance, but he certainly made a positive contribution. He gave Hull an early advantage with a try and completed 28 tackles, but his efforts weren’t rewarded as Huddersfield ran out convincing winners.
