St Helens vs Warrington Wolves: Preview

St Helens v Huddersfield Giants

Team news and form – St Helens

The Saints have a huge boost to their ranks with two-time Grand Final winner Matty Smith back from a broken leg, which he sustained against Widnes in a pre-season friendly. He’s been running for the last couple of weeks in training, so he should be ready to go, as the Red Vee need him to fire quickly if they are to capitalise on Warrington’s woes.

Recent form sees Keiron Cunningham’s men register a fantastic win, thanks largely to Theo Fages and Tommy Makinson; both were immense against a typically physical Catalans Dragons outfit in the South of France. Before this win, they hadn’t won since round one, losing to Wakefield and Leigh in recent weeks.

Team news and form – Warrington Wolves

Like Saints, Warrington welcome back an influential player in Stefan Ratchford – a man who hasn’t played since suffering at the back end of last season. They also welcome back Toby King however, they will be without Ryan Atkins through injury and Tom Lineham because of a suspension picked up in round five.

Needless to say, recent form for the Wolves has been dire as they sit bottom of the table with five losses from as many games. Last time out they were nowhere near, which is especially worrying given they faced newly-promoted Leigh Centurions, a side they should expect to beat.

Ones to watch and where the game will be won

It’s easy to pick the players to watch in this one as influential and highly-skilled duo Matty Smith and Stefan Ratchford return for Saints and Warrington respectively. Warrington need the win, there’s no doubts about that, and defeat may see them resigned to battling it out in the Middle 8s, even at this early stage of the season. For Saints, it’s another step towards getting their season back on track after some questionable results this season thus far.

St Helens Squad: Makinson, Morgan, Percival, Swift, Fages, Smith, Walmsley, Roby, Amor, Wilkin, McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Douglas, Walker, Lee, Peyroux, Richards, Owens, Ashworth, Taia.

Warrington squad: Brown, Clark, Cooper, Crosby, Dwyer, Evans, Gidley, Hill, Hughes, Johnson, King, Livett, Philbin, Ratchford, Russell, Savelio, Sims, Westerman, Westwood.

Prediction: St Helens 26-10 Warrington Wolves
