Smith set for big move in 2019

St Helens scrum-half Matty Smith is set to complete a move to 2018 Challenge Cup winners Catalan Dragons, Serious About RL understands.

The 31-year-old has been linked with various clubs, including the Dragons, all season after falling out of favour at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

With Danny Richardson, Jonny Lomax and Theo Fages all above him in the pecking order, Smith has been limited to just seven appearances in 2018, with his last coming at the start of June.

He was even sent out on dual-registration to Championship club Sheffield Eagles a month later.

It seems, therefore, that a move to the South of France is where Smith sees the opportunity to reignite his career.

Current Dragons halfback Josh Drinkwater is out of contract at the end of the season and while Steve McNamara will be keen to keep hold of him, there is certainly plenty of interest from other Super League and NRL clubs.

Should he leave Perpignan, it would pave the way for Smith to become the Dragons’ first choice halfback and partner Samisoni Langi.
