Salford Red Devils v Leigh Centurions: Preview

Salford Red Devils v Leigh Centurions

Salford host Leigh at the AJ Bell Stadium on Friday afternoon looking to avenge their defeat to the Centurions in last season’s Super 8s Qualifiers.

The high-flying Red Devils are looking to make it five wins on the run to keep the pressure on Castleford at the top. Their opponents Leigh have lost their last three games and will want to end their poor patch of form that has seen them slip down the table.

This is a rare Super League derby for Salford after missing Leigh for several seasons until their recent promotion. The Red Devils have many ex-players in the Centurions’ squad who will be out to prove a point against their old employers. It’s an uphill task for Neil Jukes’ side though as they face a Salford team who put over 50 points on Hull FC last time out.

After a decent run, Leigh have succumbed to two very disappointing home defeats against Widnes and Catalans, two teams who couldn’t buy a win before travelling to the Leigh Sports Village. After an indifferent start to life back in Super League, the Easter period could be crucial for the Centurions’ top eight hopes.

Salford coach Ian Watson has named an unchanged 19-man squad from the win over Hull FC with no fresh injury problems to worry about. Leigh welcome back Adam Higson, Dane Weston and Jamie Acton but will be without Curtis Naughton, Liam Hood and Gareth Hock for the game at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Salford Squad: Walne, Murdoch-Masila, Kopczak, O’Brien, Griffin, Johnson, Jones, Wood, Sa’u, Carney, Welham, Tasi, Mossop, Tomkins, Flanagan, Dobson, Krasniqi, Lui, Carney.

Leigh Squad: Brown, Higson, Crooks, Dawson, Ridyard, Higham, Weston, Stewart, Hansen, Pelissier, Tickle, Vea, McNally, Hampshire, Reynolds, Green, Hopkins, Acton, Burr.

Referee: Jack Smith

Touch-judges: S Kilpatrick and M Griffiths
