Salford Red Devils v Castleford Tigers: Preview

Super League odds

In one of the week’s most intriguing and exciting fixtures, Sunday afternoon plays host to the match up of the Salford Red Devils and the high-flying Castleford Tigers. Both sides have started the season positively, with the home team picking up impressive victories against Huddersfield and Warrington, whilst finding themselves unlucky to be on the losing side away at both Leeds and Wakefield. Meanwhile, the Tigers have been on fire this season, with them brushing aside the challenges of Leigh, Warrington, Leeds and Widnes to maintain a 100% start.

Salford have surprised some this season, with them looking like serious contenders to break into the top 8 – a feat they would have achieved last season had they not been given a points deduction. Especially considering the poor starts to the season by Warrington, St Helens, Huddersfield and Widnes, this could be a much improved end of season result. With the impending debut of Todd Carney, the Red Devils fans have every right to believe their team could spring an upset against a classy Castleford outfit.

The Tigers have had a phenomenal start, with their style of play gaining plaudits from supporters of every club across Super League. Despite this, the fact remains that this will be the first time they have played a team in a good vein of form. This could have an impact, but it is hard to see past an away win. Castleford should have too much quality for the home side, but the way Salford have been playing, a home victory would not be unthinkable. It is all set up to be a mouth-watering clash, which I for one am thoroughly looking forward to.

Salford have named a few changes to the squad that was narrowly defeated by Wakefield. Josh Jones is missing and is replaced by Niall Evalds, whilst Lama Tasi is replaced by Jake Bibby. The big news for the Red Devils is that Australian half back Todd Carney is finally fit enough to play, and is expected to make his debut.

The visitors only make one change from last weekend’s victory over the Widnes Vikings, with Will Maher replacing Luke Million.

Salford Squad: Adam Walne, Ben Murdoch-Masila, Craig Kopczak, Gareth O’Brien, George Griffin, Greg Johnson, Jake Bibby, Junior Sau, Justin Carney, Kriss Brining, Kris Welham, Lee Mossop, Logan Tomkins, Mark Flanagan, Michael Dobson, Olsi Krasniqi, Robert Lui, Ryan Lannon, Todd Carney.

Castleford Squad: Matt Cook, Greg Eden, Luke Gale, Zak Hardaker, Andy Lynch, Will Maher, Nathan Massey, Paul McShane, Mike McMeeken, Grant Millington, Adam Milner, Greg Minikin, Joel Monaghan, Junior Moors, Ben Roberts, Jesse Sene-Lefao, Michael Shenton, Gadwin Springer, Jake Webster.
