Recognition For Mets Chairman

After being nominated for the John Wilkin Award in 2016, Bolton Mets Chairman Stuart Cooke was shocked to learn that he had made the final three again in 2017.

The award is presented to a ‘Person Making an Outstanding Contribution to Rugby League’ by the North-West Men’s League, with the winner being announced at the End of Season Awards presentation held at Leigh Miners Rangers on Friday 24th November.

Unfortunately, Stuart was unable to attend on the evening due to being in Australia for the Rugby League World Cup, as such, his namesake Stuart MacDonald went in his place. With various other awards on offer, i.e. Man of Steel, Team of the Year, Referee of the Year, etc. the evening ticked over nicely until it was time to find out if Bolton Mets could end the year with our second piece of silverware.

It was with great pleasure to hear the name of Stuart Cooke read out as the winner before Stuart MacDonald went up to collect the award on his Chairman’s behalf. The news was quickly filtered through to Australia and to the club’s relevant social media outlets.

After hearing he had won the award, Stuart Cooke had this to say, “I am very proud to have won such an award and must pass on my thanks to everyone who has played their part along the way. I joined the Mets committee in late 2012 and I’ve just tried to do my best for the club and the players where possible”. When asked why he does what he does he gave the following response, “All I have done is follow the example set by former Chairman Jack Dorning and Secretary Albert Knight who were in charge when I first joined as a player back in 2000. The club means a lot to me and I will continue to fight for it, similarly, the sport of Rugby League needs continual promotion to help push it more and more into the limelight as I firmly believe it is the greatest game in the world”.

The John Wilkin award will now sit side by side with The Cup that we won on our recent tour to Rotterdam after winning the three-game series against the Pitbulls. The club hopes to build on these successes in 2018, do you want to be a part of it?
