NRL-bound Fonua aims to leave with more Challenge Cup glory

Fonua leaves Hull

Hull FC’s Mahe Fonua will take part in his second consecutive Challenge Cup final on Saturday, but it will also be his last.

The winger is heading to Wests Tigers in 2018 so back-to-back cup final victories is certainly on his agenda.

Fonua scored FC’s first try against Warrington Wolves in last year’s event but he insists this Saturday is about giving back to the club and its fans, who gave him a chance to thrive when he first arrived.

“It’d be awesome to go back with some more silverware, but I’m seeing this as an opportunity to give back to the club and the fans and put in a good performance just to say thank you for the opportunity that I’ve been given,” Fonua told the Hull FC website.

“As much as I’d love to go back with some more silverware, I’m going to give all I can with these last remaining games with the club.”

Fonua also highlighted the importance of the halves for both sides ahead of this weekend’s rugby league showcase.

“We know there’ll be a big battle in the halves this weekend – we’ve got Marc Sneyd and Albert Kelly and they’ve got George Williams and Tommy Leuluai,” he added.

“The game will come down to a lot of control in the halves.

“Sneydy has been really good for us this season, especially in our bigger matches, and that’s why I have so much faith and confidence in him.”
