Mcilorum set for the NRL ?

Michael McIlorum leaves Wigan after a decade at the club.

NRL side Canberra Raiders are preparing a bid to sign Irish International Hooker Michael Mcilorum from Super League side and current World Club Champions  Wigan Warriors .

The Raiders are desperate to sign a number 9 after Josh Hodgson tore his ACL in England’s World Cup Semi Final win over Tonga last weekend , an injury would could rule him out until at least June . With Kurt Baptiste also looking set to leave Canberra Stadium , Coach Ricky Stuart is desperate to sign a hooker for the start of the new season in March .

Mcilorum has expressed an interest in trying his luck in the NRL in the past and his tough tackling no nonsense approach should be a perfect fit for the Green Machine , Micky Mac has just spent the last month Down Under representing Ireland in the World Cup .

The 29 year old would link up with England World Cup stars Hodgson and Elliot Whitehead in Canberra as they look to try and improve on a disappointing 10th place in 2017 .

Losing Mcilorum would be a big blow to Wigan Coach Shaun Wane but it seems the Warriors would be prepared to give him the chance to play in the NRL , despite him still having 2 years left on his contract , but would want the deal to go through quickly so a replacement can  be found , as they also look to put a disappointing 2017 behind them . The club though may feel they are well covered at dummy half with Sam Powell , who played there  when Wigan won the 2016 Grand Final  , and look to strengthen other parts of the team .

Mcilorum himself has just returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines after his breaking his ankle in a World Club Series game against Brisbane .
