Matty Smith set to return for Wire clash

Matty Smith returns

St Helens new recruit Matty Smith is set to return to the squad for the crucial home clash with Warrington on Friday.

Smith is yet to feature for his new club in Super League, but the St Helens Star has reported that the club’s main summer signing will be in the squad for the first time this season, as his side take on bottom of the table Warrington at Langtree Park.

The former Wigan man broke his leg in a tackle by Widnes prop Manase Manuokafoa in a January pre-season friendly. Saints coach Keiron Cunningham was raging at the tackle at the time, comparing it to the one by Hull KR’s John Boudebza in Rovers opening game last season that put an end to Castleford captain Michael Shenton’s season.

For all the Red V never expected the injury to be season ending, Smith’s recovery has come a lot sooner than expected and will give the side another boost following the hard fought victory in France on Saturday.

Ironically the England International half-back’s last competitive game was also against Warrington, in the Grand Final last October as he won his second Super League ring with the Warriors.

Keiron Cunningham told the Star today: “Matty will play. He has trained for a couple of weeks now and had the Catalans game been at home, rather than jumping on a plane, he would have played in that.”

Mark Percival looks set to carry on kicking duties with Smith not yet at full match fitness.
