London keep Super League hopes alive after beating Halifax

London Broncos have moved within one point of fifth place Leigh in the Qualifiers with a 36-14 win over Halifax at Trailfinders Sports Ground.

The home side always looked to have the edge over their Championship counterparts as they bounced back from the narrow defeat to Warrington last week.

It was Halifax who took the lead early on when Steve Tyrer claimed Scott Murrell’s high kick and raced over for the first points of the game.

The lead only last five minutes though as William Barthau took a Matt Davis offload to touch down under the posts.

London were over again moments later when Elliot Kear made a break, with the supporting Barthau collecting and offloading to Alex Walker for their second try.

As they have done all season, the Broncos continued to surge forward and they scored again when Andy Ackers showed great footwork to dart over from dummy half.

Jarrod Sammut added his third successful conversion to take the score out to 18-4 after only 17 minutes.

A spell of Halifax pressure followed as they tried to get back into the game and they finally broke through eight minutes before half time as Mitch Cahalane collected James Saltonstall’s grubber to touch down.

Tyrer’s conversion was the last points of the first half with the visitors trailing 18-10 at the break.

After a close first 10 minutes to the second period, both teams were reduced to 12 men when Sammut and Rob Worrincy were sent to the sin-bin by referee Scott Mikalauskas for handbags off the ball.

London took control of the game when Rhys Williams proved too quick for the Fax defence to score in the 53rd minute. Kieran Dixon took over kicking duties and made no mistake to take the score out to 24-10.

As we entered the final quarter Andrew Henderson’s side put the result beyond doubt with a quick-fire double as Dixon powered his way over, before Kear ran 50 metres to score under the sticks.

Sammut added both conversions to put the Broncos 36-10 ahead going into the final 15 minutes.

Halifax did score a late consolation try through Worrincy but it made little difference as London claimed a 36-14 victory to keep their promotion hopes alive.
