Saints interested in Wardle

Joe Wardle St Helens

St Helens are interested in signing ex-Huddersfield second-rower Joe Wardle from the Newcastle Knights.

The 25-year-old signed for the NRL club prior to this season as part of a swap deal that saw Jake Mamo join the Giants.

However, it is believed that Wardle is suffering from home sickness after just one season Down Under and wants to return to Super League.

The St Helens reporter claim that Castleford and Warrington are also interested, with the Knights accepting Wardle’s request to leave.

Saints’ boss Justin Holbrook said: “Joe is a quality player and if he returns home, we would be interested but as far as getting him we are a long way off that at this moment in time.”

In his first season for Newcastle, Wardle has scored 3 tries in 11 appearances but has played in a struggling team.

The Knights are bottom of the NRL ladder and have won only two games all season, with a third consecutive wooden spoon looking likely for Nathan Brown’s side.
