Improving Tomkins wants World Cup place

Speaking ahead of the Challenge Cup final on Saturday, Wigan full-back Sam Tomkins admitted he is determined to be picked in England’s World Cup squad.

The 28-year-old only returned from a long injury lay-off in June, however his recent impressive displays have put him back in international contention.

England head coach Wayne Bennett opted to play Stefan Ratchford at full-back and fellow No.1 Zak Hardaker in the centres during the mid-season Test against Samoa.

With so many players vying for the same position, Tomkins knows that he must continue to strive for his best form in order to stand any chance of making the squad.

“I’m feeling good, my body is feeling healthy and I feel like I’m getting some consistency,” he told rugby-league.com.

“Like the team, I’d like to keep on improving. I want to improve every single week, not just now but for the rest of my career.

“The World Cup is certainly something I’m thinking about. I know there’s a lot of competition for places, certainly at full-back, but all I can do is try and play my best every week.

“I want to be in that World Cup squad. I love representing my country, it’s something I’m very proud to have done but I would love to do more and more.”
