Ian Millward says Sam Tomkins has “delivered zero” in his second spell at Wigan.
The former Warriors head coach says it’s now time for the England full-back to start producing after a frustrating 18 months.
Tomkins arrived back at Wigan as one of the club’s marquee players prior to the 2016 season after two years in the NRL.
The 28-year-old has only played 16 games since his return with injuries keeping him on the sidelines for long spells.
After a tough season, Tomkins is now back on the field and Millward wants him to start winning games again.
“It’s time for Tomkins to stand up,” he told sportinglife.com. “Wigan made him the player he was and paid massive money for him to return to the club.
“To this point, he’s delivered zero. A player like Sam Tomkins should win this game (v Catalans) for them.
“He should be too quick and too skilful on a dry pitch. If he stands up, they get the result they need.”
In his first spell at Wigan, Tomkins was regarded as Super League’s best player and had a phenomenal strike rate with 144 tries in 151 games.
Since his return from the NRL he has scored 7 times in 16 appearances but has looked a far cry from the player that departed for Australia at the end of 2013.
Now, in a World Cup year, the pressure is on Tomkins to produce his best again with players such as Zak Hardaker, Jamie Shaul and Stefan Ratchford vying for the England no.1 jersey.
