Hock leaves Leigh and eyes Super League move

Leigh Centurions 22-8 Warrington Wolves

Leigh Centurions have confirmed that Gareth Hock has left the club in order to finish his career in Super League.

Hock joined the Centurions ahead of the 2015 season after his release from Salford, helping them gain promotion to the top flight.

However, following the club’s recent relegation, the 34-year-old former Great Britain international has parted company with the Leythers.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Leigh,” said Hock. “In fact I have loved every minute. It is right up there with Wigan as the best clubs I have played for.

“I was absolutely made up for Degsy (Derek Beaumont) and the fans when we got to Super League as I knew how much he put into it and what it meant to him and everyone at the Club.

“I was gutted when I couldn’t add to it at the end and saw it not work out. I know Degsy well – he won’t give in and I have no doubt he will get Leigh back where they belong in Super League. I will be made up for him and all the fans when he does.

“The fans have been really good to me and mean a lot to me. I will always remember my time at Leigh and I thank them for making me so welcome.”

Despite falling through Super League’s trap door, Leigh’s early season form caught many off guard with Hock the driving force behind their impressive start.

Unfortunately, injury halted his and the team’s momentum and owner Derek Beaumont says that it was a potential turning point in their campaign.

“He has achieved so much in the game and I am grateful for his efforts, joining us in the Championship, sticking with it and eventually seeing us make it into Super League,” said Beaumont.

“He started the campaign in fantastic form until picking up an injury and ultimately that played its part in the way our season ended. Gaz deserves to end his time playing in the Super League after the career he has had and I wish him well in that campaign, as he still has a lot to offer in his no nonsense game.

“He is more composed these days but hasn’t lost that competitive and aggressive edge so he will be an asset to whoever he joins. I am sure that our fans will wish him well for the future.”
