Wigan Warriors 20-0 Leigh Centurions

Gelling charged

Report

Wigan defeated Leigh 20-0 in difficult conditions at the DW Stadium thanks to a brace of tries by centre Anthony Gelling.

In the first competitive ‘Battle of the Borough’ for 12 years, half-back George Williams was a stand-out performer as the Centurions made the World Club Champions work for the win.

Gelling opened the scoring as Williams’ kick to the corner was collected by Lewis Tierney, who collected before finding his centre to touch down.

Morgan Escare converted to make it 6-0 after seven minutes and those two points would be the last of the first half at the DW Stadium.

The Warriors tried in the final moments of the first 40 to add to their lead, but Escare hit a penalty kick and drop goal wide with skipper Sean O’Loughlin also failing to land a field goal attempt.

Shaun Wane’s men took control of the game after the break as Williams went on a darting run through the Centurions defence to score a brilliant individual try.

It wasn’t until 14 minutes from the end that the win was sewn up as Escare knocked over a penalty goal, before Gelling took a brilliant kick from Williams to take the lead out to 20-0.

That’s how it stayed as the Super League Champions maintained their perfect record in this seasons’s competition despite a strong effort from Leigh.
