Widnes Vikings 36-10 Leigh Centurions

Report

Widnes Vikings leap-frogged their wooden-spoon rivals as they clinched a much-needed victory to move themselves off the bottom of the Super League table.

An unanswered 20 points in the first half proved too much of a deficit for newcomers Leigh to overturn, despite a trying effort in the second 40.

It was a performance that conflicted Widnes’ lowly status with Rangi Chase controlling proceedings for the home side whose tries from Chris Bridge, Tom Ince, Matt Whitley and a Chris Houston and Corey Thompson brace gave them the two points.

Widnes came out firing in a first half that won them the game, with their forward pack outmuscling Leigh, and it was the home side who scored the first points. A neat kick from Joe Mellor bounced wickedly and the Centurions defence could not claim the ball as it floated about in the air.

Bridge took full advantage to touch down before it went out of play to put his side 4-0 up.

And they extended their lead just three minutes later when Chase fooled Leigh’s defence as he stepped one way and passed it the other to an onrushing Houston who timed his run perfectly and scored under the posts.

The Centurions could not find their rhythm as Widnes proved stronger in every aspect of the game with Chase and Mellor controlling the action from the halves.

Widnes had three tries chalked off before they scored again in the 33rd minute when Thompson miraculously managed to keep himself in play and touch down in the left corner.

The Centurions’ best chance came moments later but Widnes’ defence was solid enough to hold Antoni Maria out.

And what could have been 14-6, putting Leigh in a better position going into the break, turned into a 20-0 half-time lead for Widnes. They raced down the other end of the pitch and a well-practiced passage of play saw Houston go over just next to the posts for his second try.

Leigh needed to score the first points of the second half to stand a chance of a fight back, and they did.

Ryan Hampshire broke through in the middle of the park, and the Centurions then switched the ball quickly to the left. An exquisite looped pass from Josh Drinkwater evaded the Vikings defence and Nick Rawsthorne walked over the whitewash to put Leigh back into the game.

And that seemed to revatilise the away side, with the help of consecutive penalties. Leigh were gifted good field position and reduced the gap to just 10 points when Atelea Vea barged his way over the line.

Leigh then looked to be progressing up field in search of another try, but Hampshire threw a wayward pass and Thompson intercepted to race back down the pitch and score under the posts.

The home side put the game to bed ten minutes later to cap a magnificent performance. Bridge threw a dummy down the right to break through Leigh’s defence, he then passed to Ince who strolled in to secure the two points for his side.

Whitley rubbed salt into the wounds of Neil Jukes’s side when he scored on the hooter, with a perfect conversion from the right touchline by Danny Craven.

Widnes left the field to cheers of “we’re not bottom anymore” after a well-deserved third-consecutive home win.
