Widnes Vikings 16-28 Huddersfield Giants

Report

Huddersfield Giants picked up their first win of the 2017 Super League campaign after defeating Widnes Vikings at the Select Security Stadium.

Although they started the campaign without Joe Mellor and props Manase Manuokafoa, Eamon O’Carroll, Jack Buchanan and Alex Gerrard, the Vikings gave debuts to the club’s only two new arrivals for 2017, centre Tom Armstrong and second rower Tom Olbison.

The Giants squad included new signings Shannon Wakeman, Alex Mellor, Dale Ferguson, Lee Gaskell and Paul Clough. Gaskell took the full-back role in the absence of the injured Jake Mamo. Prop Sam Rapira was the Giants’ only notable absentee.

It was the Vikings with the first score of the game. Great hands from Chris Bridge and Tom Gilmore ended in Rhys Hanbury’s hands and Charly Runciman hit a flat ball to score. Hanbury added the conversion, 6-0.

It didn’t take the Giants long to get themselves on the scoreboard, though. The ball was shifted right to Leroy Cudjoe who evaded a Vikings tackler and passed to Jermaine McGillvary to score. Danny Brough missed the conversion, 6-4.

The Giants extended their lead in the 17th minute after a high bomb wasn’t collected by the Vikings and the ball ended up in the hands of Mellor who passed to Gaskell for an easy score. Brough added the extras, 6-10.

Huddersfield opted to go down the short right side on the last and Cudjoe’s grubber in goal was brilliantly put down my McGillvary for his second of the game in the 25th minute. Brough was unable to convert from the touchline, 6-14.

The Giants went close a couple of tackles earlier before Symonds crashed onto a short ball to score in the 30th minute. Brough converted the try, 6-20.

Widnes survived as a strong defence held the Giants out during the final moments of the first half.

Huddersfield shifted the ball to the left with good hands and Ferguson offloaded to Aaron Murphy to score the first try of the second half in the corner. Ryan Brierley missed the conversion, 6-24.

After a brilliant right to left shift Heremaia, who had moved into the halves, gave a cut-out pass to Marsh who cut inside to score in the 70th minute. Hanbury missed the conversion, 10-24.

A Matt Whitley inside ball hit the ground, but Hanbury was first there to pick up and score four minutes from the end. Hanbury converted, 16-24.

Brierley went down the short side on the last and gave it to Cudjoe who forced his way over with two minutes to go. Brough missed the conversion, 16-28.
