Widnes Vikings 10-19 Warrington Wolves

Report

Warrington kicked off the Easter period with a hard-fought 19-10 win at the Select Security Stadium against their Cheshire rivals Widnes.

Most of the damage was done in the first half as tries from Tom Lineham, Jack Hughes and a controversial four-pointer from Joe Philbin saw the Wolves home.

Widnes got off to the perfect start when Matty Russell knocked on, allowing the Vikings to pick up and spread the ball wide for Stefan Marsh to score in the first minute.

This would be as good as it would get in the first 40 for the home side as Tony Smith’s side responded, Lineham collecting Stefan Ratchford’s floating pass to dive home in the corner.

Making more yards and winning penalties, the Wolves soon hit the front as Hughes crashed over from close range, despite the attention of three defenders.

Philbin then scored a controversial try before half-time as he seemingly produced a double movement close to the line, but video referee James Child awarded the four-pointer.

Ryan Atkins and Declan Patton had tries turned down by Child before Patton knocked over a drop-goal to give Warrington a 17-4 lead at the break.

The second half was mostly played in the Wolves half with the hosts having most of the field position, this finally paid off when Chris Bridge kicked through for Charly Runciman to score on the hour.

Former Wire man Bridge converted to reduce the deficit to seven points going into the final quarter, however a Declan Patton penalty goal in the final moments sewed up the win in a tight second half.

It was a relieving result for Warrington who played a big part of the match with only two interchanges, Russell and Atkins both leaving the field with head injuries.

Widnes lost Tom Olbison to the same injury but Denis Betts’ side wasted too many opportunities in attack as their Cheshire rivals kicked off the Easter period with a victory.
