Widnes Vikings 0-34 Castleford Tigers

Report

An outstanding first half performance from the Castleford Tigers put Widnes to the sword on Sunday afternoon by 34 points to nil. Following a free-flowing and exhilarating game of rugby, the second half saw a dogged defensive performance from both sides, but with the Tigers leading 22-0 at the interval, it was always going to be an uphill struggle for the beleaguered home side.

Widnes started the game well, with Stefan Marsh crossing in the corner, only for it to be called back for a forward pass. Against the run of play however, Castleford took the lead half way through the first half through centre Greg Minikin. McShane cleverly switched the focus of attack in the build up, shifting it wide to Mike McMeeken, who delivered a great offload to Minikin to go over. Luke Gale added the extras to bring the scores to 6-0

The visitors almost doubled their lead following the restart, with Michael Shenton making a good break, but Greg Eden couldn’t find the line, and was pushed into touch by Corey Thompson. In a fast paced first half, with chances frequent, the Vikings also wasting a good chance after Runciman lost control of the ball close to the Tigers line.

The quality from the visitors began to shine through towards the end of the first half, with Minikin doubling his tally for the afternoon on 29 minutes. A scintillating break from Ben Roberts created a golden opportunity for the tigers to extend their lead, with the youngster Minikin crossing. Gale again landed a perfect conversion from out wide with a swirling wind to contend with.

Things got worse for an initially optimistic Widnes outfit, with the restart sailing out on the full. A few tackles later, the away fans were celebrating again as captain Shenton took a great pass from Gale to push the Tigers further in front, and claim his 100th career try. Gale again perfect with the boot, making it 18-0.

The Tigers looked to finish the half with a flourish, with another classy try before the break. After switching the play from one side to the other, the home defence couldn’t get across quick enough and Shenton’s clever flick on sent Greg Eden acrobatically over in the corner. Gale showed he was in fact human with his conversion attempt hitting the post, and the Tigers entering the sheds with a 22 point lead.

Following a series of errors from both sides brought about by a sudden downpour, Castleford began the second half as they ended the first with Matt Cook crashing over on the 50 minute mark. Gale’s conversion took the scores to 28-0. It also marked Gale’s 1500th career point. 5 minutes later, Classy Cas looked to be living up to their name after another flick on from the impressive Shenton led to a further try from Eden.

Both sides showed good defensive steel in the final 20 minutes, with Castleford returning to the summit of the table after a comprehensive win. Notable performances from the mercurial Luke Gale and talismanic Michael Shenton mean the Yorkshire outfit are certainly the team to beat this year. Widnes remain languishing in the bottom two alongside their Cheshire rivals Warrington, with Dennis Betts hoping to have some of his key injured stars back soon.
