Warrington Wolves 22-22 Hull FC

Warrington Wolves 22-6 Widnes Vikings

Report

Round 7 of Super League saw Warrington Wolves take on Hull FC at the Halliwell-Jones Stadium.

The Wolves were desperately seeking their first win of the season as they languished at the bottom of Super League, while high-flying Hull were looking for their 6th win in 7 games positioned in 3rd place.

It was Hull who broke the deadlock as the mercurial Albert Kelly spotted a gap in the Wolves defence to secure his 8th try in 6 games (2), Marc Sneyd adding the extras to make it 6 – 0 to the visitors.

The game was a physical contest with a series of big hits from both sides. However, the Wolves responded working the ball out wide on the right to Matty Russell who was able to touch down (14), Kurt Gidley missing the conversion out wide: 4 – 6 to FC.

Hull edged back ahead with a spectacular try from Jake Connor, who intercepted on his own line to run 90 metres (25), followed up by an impressive Sneyd conversion: 4 – 12.

Both teams continued to test one another’s defence but the Wolves were penalised for holding Kelly down in the tackle, allowing Hull to extended their lead via the boot of Sneyd (31): 4 – 14.

Hull capitalised on a Wolves error as debutant Jez Litten scooped the ball up, releasing Sika Manu, who then sent Jamie Shaul over for his 3rd try in as many games (35). Sneyd adding the extras under the posts: 4 – 20.

There was time for another try before half-time, as Matty Russell made it a brace scoring out wide again after the Wolves received a penalty (39), Gidley missed the kick to leave the scoreline at 8 – 20 in favour of the Airlie Birds.

The second half got under way and Hull were awarded an early penalty when Mark Minichiello was brought down after making a break, Sneyd successfully kicking the penalty (50): 8 – 22.

Warrington quickly responded as Daryl Clark scooted over on the last tackle for a try (55), Gidley adding the extras leaving the scoreline at 14 – 22. FC had an opportunity to extend their lead again on (58) but Sneyd uncharacteristically missed the kick.

The Wolves continued to show fighting spirit and were able to exploit Hull’s right edge again as Matty Russell completed his hat trick (64), Gidley converting from the sideline to leave the scoreline at 20 – 22 in the closest of margins.

The home side almost responded again, only for Mike Cooper to drop the ball over the line. However the Wolves were able to respond after they were awarded a penalty 10 metres out from the FC line, Gidley levelling the scores at 22 – 22 (71).

A frantic finale would unfold as Stefan Ratchford and Marc Sneyd traded missed drop goals for their respective teams. This was followed up by a missed Gidley effort, leaving the final score at 22 – 22 in a thrilling encounter between the sides.
