Huddersfield Giants 12-28 Leeds Rhinos

Report

Leeds Rhinos edged past Wakefield Trinity with a 16-18 Betfred Super League victory at the Beaumont Legal Stadium on Saturday evening.

Wakefield opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Bill Tupou took Danny McGuire’s cross-field kick and handed over to Mason Caton-Brown to do the rest. Liam Finn added the extras, 6-0.

Kyle Wood bagged his first try of the season six minutes later. Dean Hadley was the provider, taking the ball to the line before offloading to Wood, who finished with pure class. Finn was unable to convert, 10-0.

Rhinos looked certain to score when they broke downfield and nearly crossed through Ryan Hall in the 16th minute. Outstanding defence from Ben Jones-Bishop stopped him, though.

The visitors got themselves on the scoresheet three minutes later when they spread the ball out wide and Stevie Ward crossed. Liam Sutcliffe couldn’t add the extras, 10-4.

Leeds were in again in the 22nd minute when Kallum Watkins released the ball to Tom Briscoe who scored in the corner. Sutcliffe was unable to convert, 10-8.

Wakefield looked to have extended their lead in the 36th minute when Hadley put Matthew Ashurst through a hole, but referee Phil Bentham judged the pass forward.

Trinity were leading 10-8 at the half-time break.

As they did in the first, the hosts started the second half brightly and went close to scoring when Samuel Williams broke downfield and found Scott Grix with a wonderful pass. However, the pass out wide was poor and ran into touch.

Leeds were first to score in the second half. The Rhinos kept the ball alive on the last tackle and Briscoe crossed for his second try in the 58th minute. Sutcliffe missed his third kick of the game, 10-12.

The visitors further extended their lead two minutes later when Grix and Jones-Bishop struggled to deal with McGuire’s kick and Joel Moon touched down. Sutcliffe added the extras, 10-18.

Leeds’ lead was narrowed when Woods founds Williams and the half-back sent a lovely pass out to Jones-Bishop for the try in the 71st minute. Finn converted from the touchline, 16-18.

Despite a late fightback, Wakefield were unable to regain the lead and went on to lose the game, 16-18.
