Swinton Lions 28-35 Bradford Bulls

Leon Pryce retirement

Report

Bradford Bulls gained their first win of the Kingstone Press Championship season as they defeated Swinton Lions 35-28 at Heywood Road. Star performances from Oscar Thomas and Ethan Ryan helped Bradford to victory and they will be wanting to push on as they try to play their way back to safety. A hat-trick from Andy Thornley wasn’t enough for Swinton, who will be eager to make amends for their loss when they take on Featherstone Rovers in round four.

Ryan opened the scoring in the early stages following good work from Scott Moore. Thomas missed the conversion. Thornley responded for the Lions soon after as they took the lead for the first time following Chris Atkin’s conversion. Thomas and Shaun Robinson posted tries for Bradford and Swinton respectively before Ross Oakes and James Mendieka crossed the whitewash to put Bradford 22-10 up at the break.

Consecutive scores from Thornley and Jack Murphy in the second half levelled matters prior to the final quarter. Things then started to get heated as Thomas kicked a penalty goal before Swinton’s Jack Higginson and Anthony Bate were both sent to the sin-bin while Bradford’s Colton Roche was also shown a yellow card. The Bulls saw the game out well as Ryan completed his hat-trick and Thomas, who orchestrated proceedings for the West Yorkshire side, kicked a drop goal.
