Swinton Lions 23-26 London Broncos

William Barthau playing for the London Broncos.

Report

Swinton Lions almost caused an upset at Heywood Road as the well-fancied London Broncos were pushed to the limit before claiming a 26-23 victory. The hosts had a 16-10 lead at the break and were 10-0 up after eight minutes thanks to tries from Shaun Robinson and Liam Forsyth. Chris Atkin was successful with one conversion. London reacted well to their early setbacks and Rhys Williams registered his side’s first score of the afternoon after being fed the ball by Jay Pitts. Jarrod Sammut was off target with his conversion. Connor Dwyer was sin-binned for holding down but the Lions held on to their lead despite his absence. A Chris Atkin penalty extended Swinton’s lead to eight points before Sammut crossed the whitewash on 35 minutes. He converted his own try but the two point gap was rather short lived as Forsyth bagged his brace moments later.

Swinton started the second half brilliantly with a 45th minute try from Tom Davies, which was converted by Atkin. However, two converted tries in five minutes from William Barthau and Mark Ioane levelled the scores with the hour mark fast approaching. Atkin missed the chance to put his side in front with a penalty goal but he made no mistake on 69 minutes when he coolly slotted over a one pointer. It was a tense finish at Heywood Road and the capital club managed to steal the game away from their opponents when Daniel Harrison touched down after good work from Eddie Battye. Sammut couldn’t convert but that made no difference by the end of the game as London held out for a hard-fought victory.
