Report

St Helens came back from 6-0 down to extend Leigh Centurions’ losing streak to seven games with a convincing home win in Round 12 of the Betfred Super League.

Jamie Acton rumbled through for the opener in the early stages but tries from  Mark Percival and Theo Fages gave Saints a six-point lead at the break.

The visitors continued to front up, despite Ryan Morgan’s try early in the second half.

Scores from Regan Grace and Alex Walmsley were enough to finish Leigh hopes.

Leigh opened the scoring in the eighth minute, Acton the scorer for Leigh. Ben Reynolds added the extras, 0-6.

Great hands from Saints on the far side saw Mark Percival cross over to put the hosts on the scoreboard 12 minutes later. Percival’s conversion brought the scores level, 6-6.

Saints took the lead in the 27th minute. The ball was kept alive on the far side, Zeb Taia found Percival who somehow got it to Theo Fages who went in at the far corner. Percival converted, 12-6.

Adam Swift had one chalked off for being held up. On the next set, Morgan backed himself and crossed over in the 50th minute. Percival added the extras, 18-6.

Fages found Grace with a cut out pass to score his side’s fourth try in the 64th minute. Percival missed with his conversion attempt, 22-6.

Six minutes later Saints were in again. A great break from Dominique Peyroux set up Walmsley to score for the hosts. Percival’s kick was on target this time, 28-6.

Leigh went close to scoring their second of the game two minutes before the final hooter, only to be held up and then knock on over the line.

Both sides ended the game with 12 men as Saints’ Adam Walker and Eloi Pelissier of Leigh were sin-binned for fighting.
