St Helens 26-22 Castleford Tigers

St Helens 19-12 Hull FC

Report

St Helens inflicted only the second Super League defeat of 2017 on leaders Castleford as they picked up their first win since the departure of Keiron Cunningham.

The victory also sees Saints maintain their incredible home record against the Tigers who have not won an away league match against the Red V since 1990.

Castleford opened up an eight-point lead in the opening quarter thanks a try from Greg Eden and two goals from Luke Gale.

However, the home side would take a commanding lead into half-time thanks to three quick-fire tries all involving man of the match Mark Percival.

The first came after a run across the line allowed Matty Fleming to cross, before another clever piece of play saw him set up Luke Douglas, the prop showing great strength to score.

Percival then got a try of his own as he latched on to Theo Fages’ kick, the Saints centre converted and added a penalty goal on half-time to make it 20-8.

The Tigers needed a response in the second period and they got it as tries from Ben Roberts and another from Eden set up a fantastic final 20 minutes, with the score at 20-18.

With 11 minutes to go the impressive Regan Grace made it two tries in two appearances with Percival’s fifth goal giving the hosts an eight-point advantage.

Roberts got his second try in the final minute but it was too late, with Saints’ interim coaching team of Jamahl Lolesi, Sean Long and Derek Traynor picking up their first win in charge.
