Salford Red Devils 24-50 Leeds Rhinos

Report

Leeds produced one of their best performances of the season to hammer top-four rivals Salford 50-24 at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The Rhinos crossed for nine tries in the resounding win, with much of the damage done in the first half.

Despite scoring first, Salford were 36-6 down at the break as they struggled to control the ruck speed and offload game of the visitors.

As mentioned, it was the Red Devils who took the lead after seven minutes as Tom Briscoe spilled Robert Lui’s kick allowing Josh Wood to pick up and score.

The Rhinos hit back in the 14th minute with England winger Ryan Hall finishing off a superb expansive move from the visitors.

From here Leeds dominated the half and winger Briscoe made up for his earlier error as he benefited from some quick hands to score in the corner.

Four minutes later and they were in again as Kallum Watkins dummied his way over, the centre converting to make it 16-6.

The Rhinos purple patch continued two minutes later the impressive Matt Parcell forced his way over, Watkins again adding the conversion to open up a 16-point lead.

On the half-hour mark things got worse for the hosts as Junior Sa’u was sin-binned for a challenge that saw Watkins leave the field looking very groggy.

Now a man down it was damage limitation for the Red Devils, but they were unable to stop the onslaught.

Joel Moon, now in the centres after Jordan Lilley replaced Watkins, scored against his old team after good work from Danny McGuire and Hall.

There was still time for two more tries before the break. Jamie Jones-Buchanan got the first as he supported run-away hooker Parcell, before Briscoe got his second from a brilliant McGuire kick.

A nightmare first-half finally ended for Ian Watson’s side, Leeds 36-6 to the good as referee James Child was booed from the field.

The break seemed to do Salford good as just two minutes in Ben Murdoch-Masila showed great strength to collect Olsi Krasniqi’s offload and score.

It was a much closer second half and as the game entered the final quarter, Lilley kicked a penalty goal to extend the Rhinos lead to 38-12.

However, from the kick-off, young full-back Jack Walker knocked on and Michael Dobson took full advantage as he dived over from the resulting set.

Any hopes of a miraculous comeback were dashed though as Salford this time spilled the kick-off and Anthony Mullally powered his way over just seconds later.

Lilley added the extras as Brian McDermott’s side led 44-18 going into the final 10 minutes.

Murdoch-Masila got his second try of the game with time running out but Leeds had the last laugh, young full-back Walker finding his way over from close range.

Lilley’s conversion made the final score 50-24 in what was an outstanding win for the Rhinos, the two competition points putting them above Salford into second.
