Salford Red Devils 10-34 Hull FC

Report

Friday night’s Betfred Super League Clash saw Salford Red Devils take on Hull FC as both sides look to carry on their improved form in a crucial game for both teams.

Hull got off the mark early on after a towering kick into the corner by Jake Connor was caught by Fetuli Talanoa on the wing who touched down (6), Connor unable to convert to give the away side an early lead: 0-4.

The Airlie Birds were in again for another as Albert Kelly scored his 16th try of the season after releasing Liam Watts down the middle, who duly sent the ball back to the supporting Kelly to score (16), Connor adding the two points to make it 0-10.

Salford continued to make errors and after a knock-on by Junior S’au, Kelly seized upon it kicking the loose ball towards the try line to score a great second effort (27), Connor converting to make it 0-16.

The Red Devils had a chance to respond, Gareth O’Brien throwing out wide to Niall Evalds but referee Ben Thaler deemed the pass to be forward.

Hull punished them near the Salford line as Danny Washbrook, replacing the injured Danny Houghton at hooker, scooted over under the sticks to show great strength to score (34), Connor converting with ease: 0-22 as half-time arrived.

Salford got the response they wanted in the second-half with a try after working the ball along the line to Evalds, who touched down out wide from a Kris Welham pass (43), Michael Dobson accurate with the boot leaving the score at 6-22.

The Airlie Birds took advantage of more ill-discipline from Salford, Carlos Tuimavave running at the line with purpose out wide to barge over (47), Connor kicking a tricky conversion on the touchline to extend FC’s lead to 6-28.

A period of exchanged sets would occur and as Salford tried to force an opening, a loose ball was

collected by Jamie Shaul on his line, to go the length of the field and win a foot race with Jake Bibby to the corner (59), Connor kicking another great conversion as Hull consolidated their lead: 6-34.

Salford searched for a reply and they found one with Weller Hauraki, who went down the blind side to go in on the wing (63), O’Brien missing the kick leaving the Red Devils with much work to do at 10-34.

There we a number of errors in the latter stages of the game, 10-34 as the full-time hooter sounded to complete an impressive victory for Lee Radford’s men.
