Rochdale Hornets gave their survival chances in the Championship a timely boost with a 34-24 victory over Oldham at Bower Fold. Thanks to braces from Kevin Penny and Declan Kay, the Hornets will start their Championship Shield campaign four points clear of the Rougheyds with seven games remaining.
Rochdale went into the break 20-12 courtesy of tries from Penny, Kay and Jake Eccleston as well as a Danny Yates penalty goal. Daniel Smith and Adam Clay both got on the scoresheet for Oldham, who had work to do in the second half if they were to salvage anything from the game.
Dave Hewitt opened the scoring in the second half to close the gap but tries either side of the hour mark from Jordan Case and Kay handed the Hornets a 12 point lead. George Tyson halved the deficit with a converted try but with nine minutes remaining, Penny completed his brace to seal the victory for Rochdale.
