Oldham started their Championship season with a 26-10 win over Sheffield Eagles at Bower Fold. The hosts were 6-4 down at the break but Scott Naylor’s men reacted well and put in the hard work to take the spoils.
Sheffield handed a debut to new signing Dane Chisholm while Oldham put loanees Tuoyo Egodo and Kieran Gill straight into the starting lineup following their arrival from Castleford Tigers. The first score of the afternoon went the way of Sheffield as Matty Fozard muscled his way over after just five minutes. Simon Brown added the extras. Once the deadlock was broken, the game was a real arm wrestle with both sides getting into good territory but neither making the scoreboard work further. Oldham probably had the best of the chances with Gill coming agonisingly close before being stopped in his tracks by Ben Blackmore. The hosts had two goal line drop-outs to their name in the first half and they finally made the pressure pay five minutes before the break. Garry Lo fumbled a grubber which allowed Danny Langtree to touch down. Scott Leatherbarrow was off target with the conversion attempt. The half-time hooter sounded but the action wasn’t over due to Blackmore and Turner being sin-binned for a little punch-up.
Oldham flew out of the blocks in the second half and scored two tries in the opening 11 minutes through Adam Clay and Dave Hewitt. Leatherbarrow converted on both occasions to put Oldham 16-6 up. Leatherbarrow then kicked a penalty goal to extend the lead to two converted tries. It took till the final quarter for Sheffield to add to their tally and it was Ryan Millar who posted the team’s second try of the contest. Brown misfired from the touchline. Unfortunately for the South Yorkshire side, they were condemned to their first defeat when Langtree completed his brace on 77 minutes. Leatherbarrow was successful with the conversion, as well as a penalty goal moments before the final whistle.
